HELP! Genealogists reaching out to help each other.

"Queries" have long been a way for genealogists who are geographically distant find each other and work together.

Queries used to be advertisements in newspapers or a genealogy magazine... now they are done online.

The genealogical community is world wide and many of its citizens will go out of their way to help fellow researchers.

Message Boards

1. GenForum message boards

2. Ancestry.com/Rootsweb message boards (same data, whether you go through Ancestry or Rootsweb)

You might register with the Rootsweb surname register.

Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness -- you must first read the FAQ for requesters, then you can see if a volunteer is available for the area in which you need research. Notice they also have an FAQ page for volunteers, should you wish to repay in kind.

Gen Lookups -- seems to be linking to look up pages on the GenWeb sites.

Books We Own is a place for bookowners to list their willingness to do lookups in books held in home libraries. Perhaps someone has the very book you need to check.

Genealogy.com has a record lookups forum -- but sometimes you have success making a request on the locality forum for the area in which you need the lookup.
