Books and Audio Tapes

All of the three books listed below have a small section covering each state that includes maps, historical information, vital records coverage and a bibliography of resources for that state.

1. Handybook for Genealogists ( 11th edition) (find in a library) (note: some libraries may have earleir editions; those are perfectly usable)
2. Ancestry's Redbook (you'll want the 3rd edition) (find in a library)
3. The Family Tree Resource Book for Genealogical Research (find in a library)

Here are some books and tapes specific to Maine Research

• Bookmark or print out the FHL Maine Research Outline (Unfortunately, this Research Outline does not have a .pdf copy, so it will be more cumbersome to print it out.)
• Also at the FHL site, explore the bibliogrpahy of Maine Statewide Indexes and Collections
• Frost. Maine Genealogy: A Bibliographical Guide, Rev Ed. 1985 (many of those offered for sale on the internet will be the older edition, 1977 -- 1985 is old enough! ) (find in a library)
• New England Family Histories and Genealogies: Maine and Rhode Island
• Audiotapes of lectures taped at genealogy conferences with the word "Maine" in the title

Historical Maps of Maine. (U Alabama) See instructions for viewing these maps; for some reason, you can only view them in a small pop up window, which negates much of their value. You can, however, purchase a map, which might be worth it if you will be doing extensive reseach in Maine.

You can purchase reproductions of maps from old county atlases at this site. They offer county, town and city maps, but unfortunatley, no preview of the map you are ordering.
